OP yo! I'm literally on my 72nd hour of no sleep. Conventions are beautiful aren't they??
Anyway, so I got dragged into this convention due to a friend wanting to go. I was down for it and it wasn't really that far from Montreal anyway so why the heck not? My first reaction when I got to the convention... well it wasn't great nor spectacular mind you.
The usual saying of
Don't judge a book by its coveris always at the forefront of my mind when going to new areas, meeting new people, trying out new things, and all that jazz. This one was no different. Arriving at an early time -read as 11:30 AM on Friday the 24th of January- you shouldn't really expect much stuff... Dealer's Room isn't even open until Saturday!!!
Our little group of geeks did absolutely nothing for a very good while. I also can't stress it enough -also don't read that in the literal sense of the word-. I digress though, the Game Room being open was a safe haven for most of the people that arrived at such an ungodly hour. That or you could have just gone to your Hotel Room and sleep or something...
Anyway... Everything started off around 4:30 - 5:00 (ish) when people started filling up the rather small convention area. I don't hold this in any negative point of view at all. It certainly made finding Cosplayers very easy to find. Unlike other conventions -mostly large ones like Anime North, OtaCon, Anime Expo, and AFA- you can find pretty much anyone within a few steps.
Although it does pose problem in terms of finding areas to take pictures of your Cosplayers especially if it's not a private photoshoot. People passing by here and there might end up photo-bombing your one perfect shot. But thanks to G-Anime's size, it's pretty easy to get something setup fast fast.
I have short recordings of a pretty well done Eureka Seven OP that I'll be uploading when I get back from this trip. Forgot to install my video editor on my laptop... =(
Basic Kendo was pretty much taught in the Kendo Room to those who were interested in it. And right beside that was where HOSHI☆FURU held their concert.
I continued walking around and taking pictures -pretty much what I usually do anyway- and took note of stuff here and there. Then came the time when you walk around and the majority of the people you see... well... you've already taken their pictures. So now was the perfect time to check out some panels!
An example from the Anime category was:
Let's meet in our new life. Hints were given out if no one was able to answer it obviously... Anyway this one is pretty obvious as Anime goes and I was surprised that the contestants weren't able to get it. There was an act, but it was completely wrong. (Those not knowing the answer - it's Angel Beats!)
Was that too hard? They obviously went easier:
Dattebayowas the single utter out of the announcer. Easy right? Yup instant reaction from both the audience and the contestants. The appeal? Attempt at a Kage Bunshin.
You think you got the answer right? Go ahead and act. But if you fail, you make a complete fool out of yourself. At the top of my head, these were the things I remembered for the Anime Category -not in any particular order-:
I'll control you with my Geass,
If you die in this game, you die in real life,
Ghouls, vampires, and lots of blood,
BAN-KAI!, and
Gay countries. Think you got these very easy answers?
I kill following a Code,
Winter is Coming,
Ghosts, Demons, Angels, other similar things, and a super cool car,
High functioning sociopath. Can you guess them? Pretty easy yo!
It's not over yet yo! Following up on the TV Shows - Video Games. People just flocked towards the stage to become a contestant and the judges decided to pair them up in teams due to time limit -I believe they had about 12 minutes left on their clock at this point-
Like majority of the conventions that appear around Montreal: Carta Magica represent yo!!!
